Memorial Chapel, Wesleyan Unveristy&nbsp; Spring 2026 Max MSP composition by Paula Mathussen “For Njambat, Ilana Harris-Babou asked her father, Dame Babou, to translate Audre Lorde's poem "Litany For Survival" into Wolof. When he was a young man, he translated political speeches into Wolof for politicians in the newly independent nation of Senegal. He also ran a late-night Wolof-language radio show in NYC for his fellow immigrants to listen to as they drove taxis. The work combines this audio with sound recorded on the streets of Dakar and Brooklyn, and samples from musicians like Buju Banton, Pa Salieu, and Abdou Guité Seck.” <img width="1280" height="720" encouraged to shape their own sense of purpose and affirm their individuality within their community. A version of the video was installed in “Under My Feet” at Storefront for Art &amp; Architecture. I’ve never had the chance to show the work in Brooklyn and would love to share a single-channel adaptation closer to my community. More information from Storefront: In Under My Feet,&nbsp;artist Ilana Harris-Babou delves into her childhood memories, reimagining and reinventing the playful rituals of her Central Brooklyn upbringing. In this exhibition, she meticulously layers and transforms the sounds, colors, and textures of Prospect Lefferts Gardens, East Flatbush, and Crown Heights—neighborhoods predominantly inhabited by African-American, Afro-Caribbean, and West Indian immigrants. Through this creative process, Harris-Babou revisits and reconstructs her sense of home and belonging, engaging with themes of intimacy, witness, dispossession, and the possibilities for the sidewalks and storefronts of Nostrand Avenue, Church Avenue, and Flatbush Avenue. Through a blend of sound, imagery, and video, Harris-Babou stages a vivid representation of her childhood neighborhood, bringing to light diverse notions of place hidden in plain sight. This immersive installation presents itself as a nostalgic journey to her youth—skipping over sidewalk cracks, perching on cellar gates beneath bodegas, and pondering the vibrancy of its towering signs. Harris-Babou layers the interior with an expansive streetscape, using the gallery as a place to celebrate intergenerational businesses and retail spaces that have served as hubs for liberatory pedagogies within Afro-diasporic communities. “Myself the Way I Am” pays homage to Lenore Briggs and the Lefferts Gardens Montessori, where Black children were encouraged to shape their own sense of purpose and affirm their individuality within their community. On the opposite end of the gallery, she recreates the protective havens provided by neighborhood institutions like the African Record Centre, offering a glimpse into the resources they have accumulated over the years and inviting audiences to choreograph their own worldbuilding experience through contemplation and curiosity. Under My Feet recognizes and reconnects with a vanishing landscape of self-determination in the face of gentrification and displacement, while claiming a future rooted in its enduring legacy. <img from Storefront for Art &amp; Architecture: In Under My Feet,&nbsp;artist Ilana Harris-Babou delves into her childhood memories, reimagining and reinventing the playful rituals of her Central Brooklyn upbringing. In this exhibition, she meticulously layers and transforms the sounds, colors, and textures of Prospect Lefferts Gardens, East Flatbush, and Crown Heights—neighborhoods predominantly inhabited by African-American, Afro-Caribbean, and West Indian immigrants. Through this creative process, Harris-Babou revisits and reconstructs her sense of home and belonging, engaging with themes of intimacy, witness, dispossession, and the possibilities for the sidewalks and storefronts of Nostrand Avenue, Church Avenue, and Flatbush Avenue. Through a blend of sound, imagery, and video, Harris-Babou stages a vivid representation of her childhood neighborhood, bringing to light diverse notions of place hidden in plain sight. This immersive installation presents itself as a nostalgic journey to her youth—skipping over sidewalk cracks, perching on cellar gates beneath bodegas, and pondering the vibrancy of its towering signs. Harris-Babou layers the interior with an expansive streetscape, using the gallery as a place to celebrate intergenerational businesses and retail spaces that have served as hubs for liberatory pedagogies within Afro-diasporic communities. “Myself the Way I Am” pays homage to Lenore Briggs and the Lefferts Gardens Montessori, where Black children were encouraged to shape their own sense of purpose and affirm their individuality within their community. On the opposite end of the gallery, she recreates the protective havens provided by neighborhood institutions like the African Record Centre, offering a glimpse into the resources they have accumulated over the years and inviting audiences to choreograph their own worldbuilding experience through contemplation and curiosity. Short and suggestive videos play behind smart mirrors, their scale suggesting the form of a medicine cabinet. A visual and aural mix – including ambient meditation music, health advice written as poetic text, urgent calls for emotional support, and CAPTCHA imagery – offers ambiguous and contradictory instructions to the viewer who is implicated in the reflective surface of the mirrored screen. I question what defines healthy in today’s environment, particularly for women and minority communities. The videos probe whether networked appliances and digital applications can promote intelligent choices for health and well-being, and how these “smart’ and interactive machines increasingly live alongside us in intimate spaces of the home. Wall relief sculptures combine cast beauty products and trendy bathroom tile with the clay imprint of “swipes” and “taps” similar to the gestures associated with touch screens. I’d likely make a shorter cut for the group show. Let Down Reflex explores the history of breastfeeding as it has been narrativized, advertised, and pathologized for Black mothers in America. It features the personal testimony of my relatives, set to a soundtrack based on the African-American lullaby&nbsp; “All the Pretty Little Horses.” The video includes interviews with my mother, sister, and niece.
